Interview With The Owner Of Ka-Pow Comics, Paul Thornton.
Questions and interview conducted by Commander Viviax.
An interview with the awesome owner of Ka-Pow comics, Paul Thornton.
He is very nice man, who runs a awesome comic book shop, etc, shop, in huddersfield.
1. Introducing Paul Thornton. The owner of the Featured Business: Ka-Pow Comics.
He is a awesome, nice, man, and his shop is awesome and you should definately check it out.
2. What are your reasons for opening your awesome shop?
It's basically been my ultimate dream job since I was a teenager. When I left college I was lucky enough to get a part time job in someone else's comic book store, and it was brilliant. Ever since then, whenever anyone has asked me what I would love to do for a living, it's been this. After going to university as a mature student during the financial collapse, I struggled to get a proper job, so put all of my effort into getting this off the ground, and after nearly a year of hard work, we finally opened this summer.
3. What are your favourite comics, graphic novels, etc?
I've always been a big fan of the Batman. Growing up watching re-runs of the Adam West Batman show made me appreciate the stories, but lieing about my age to get into the first Tim Burton Batman movie really made me a fan. The Killing Joke - origin story of the Joker - was the first proper book I picked up, less than a week after watching the movie, is what started me as a collector, and is still my favourite graphic novel of all time.
4. How did you get into comics, graphic novels, etc?
Starting collecting was difficult. There were no comic book stores so everything was bought in collected format from books shops, or cheap UK re-prints from newsagents. It wasn't until someone opened a shop in Huddersfield that I really got into reading comic books properly. I got hooked pretty quickly actually, and was soon spending all of my paper round money, followed by actual wages on monthly titles. It's the collecting of the regular books that I think I like the best. Knowing that you have to wait four weeks for the next issue, and finding other things to read to tide you over!
5. What are your favourite films, tv, etc?
Always a hard question, as it depends on mood. But I'm a big fan of horror and slasher flicks as I used to watch them a lot as a kid. Super hero movies can actually be a bit hit and miss, but Marvel and Disney are doing a great job at the moment, I just hope they can keep it up!
6. What are your favourite books, graphic novels, stories, etc?
Apart for the one mentioned above, there's a few writers whose work I'll always seek out. Niel Gaiman for one, who wrote the excellent Sandman books, and is writing them again at the moment. Garth Ennis, who created Preacher and Hitman, two of my all time favourites. Oh, and Warren Ellis, who created Transmetropolitan, a comic book that's written so well, that I think even non comic book readers would get a kick out of it.
7. What is your favourite bands, artists, music, etc?
I actually listen to a lot of heavy metal. Discovering Guns 'n' Roses when I was eleven set me on that path, but these days I love some extreme metal like Bathory or Emperor, plus some Metallica or Iron Maiden too.
8. What are you interests, hobbies, etc? What are your favourite things?
I'm a role player! Dungeons and dragons and the like, but anything else that looks interesting. As a young kid, I loved the Choose you own adventure/Fighting Fantasy books, and that led to Games Workshop war gaming. From there I jumped to Role Playing Games (RPGs), and have been playing them most of my life now. I still meet up with the gaming society every Tuesday evening at a local pub - about 40 of us - and we play a whole bunch of games.
9. If you could visit, live in, any world/s from fantasy or scifi, were would you go? You could not die or get any diseases.
That's a pretty tough call. For Sci-fi, it's have to be the Star Wars universe. Nothing beats some mystical light sabre action. For fantasy, I think Skyrim, from the Elder Scrolls game. I still keep playing the game and will never get bored of just walking around the world. I would also love to live in a perpetual state of John Hughes movies. Growing up with them, and the idyllic American teenage life just appeals...
10. What being/s from fantasy and scifi would you be, if you could?
Dragons!! I can't help but feel that Smaug has it all sorted out.
11. If you could have any item/s from fantasy and scifi, what would they be?
Hands down, no contest: A light sabre. That thing just has so many uses around the home.
12. Please describe your shop, so as many people as possible can come to it. :)
Well, we're located in Huddersfield indoor market, and we aim to be a home for anyone who wants to come and geek out with us. I've been a geek long enough to know that being on the outside isn't always fun, and that some geeks still go out of the their way to be exclusionary. I want the shop to be welcoming to everyone, no matter who you are or what flavour geek floats your boat.
As for the shop itself; well, we stock everything we can in the way of American import comic books and graphic novels, with a whole bunch of Manga too. We're also starting to see more stock come in of the collectable variety, such as action figures and apparel. We're still a young shop though, so if you can't find what you're looking for, we will do our best to get it in stock for you.
You should definately check out Paul Thorntons shop, when in huddersfield. He's very helpful and approachable, and the shop is nice and welcoming.
His prices are very good.
If you're just getting into comics, or a veteran, it's the perfect place.
He sells comics, graphic novels, posters, manga, toys, many things.
Please support this awesome shop, and it's awesome owner.
Buying your comics, etc, from his shop is better price wise. No postage, like with amazon.
You spend less.
Also, you get to browse, and truely see the items, and it's a great way to find new things.
Amazon, etc, it's not the same as holding the items.
I myself will may be buying stuff from him, should finances allow.
If you're a noob to comics, it can be a bit intimidating. I'm just getting into comics, myself.
But this shop, it's nice and welcoming. It's the perfect way to get into comics, graphic novels, etc.
