So. Work.
Well you have to have it. For Money.
And to apply for other jobs you need References.
Now, theoretically. You can use your manager.
But sometimes you cannot trust your manager.
I know you will get told use the manager. But don't fall for it. It is a bad idea sometimes.
By law they cannot say bad things. But they can try and sneak it in.
You sometimes need more reliable sources.
So what are your alternatives for references.
Work Colleagues.
Work colleagues you trust can be.
They can be Personal and Professional.
They don't have to be your own company. So long as you work with them.
Volunteer Work.
You can volunteer at charity shops or libraries, etc.
That will give you references. From managers or fellow volunteers.
You can also learn all kinds of useful skills. These count as Professional.
Clients.
If you did work for someone. In a self employed sense. They can be a Reference. These count as Professional.
Your Job Coach At The Job Centre.
If you get benefits you can use your Job Coach as a Reference. Also your Job Coach if you are enrolled in a programme by the Job Centre. These count as Professional.
Neighbours And Friends.
If you are starting out. You can ask neighbours and friends to be References.
If the company is bad. You can be better off using only alternative references.
It is also worth noting that it is iliegal for a manager to give a employee a bad reference. There things to do for if they do.
But. If you think it is too risky. Go with alternatives.
There are many alternatives. You should use them. Get as many as you can.
