This film is absolutely amazing! You should most definately buy it on dvd as soon as you can!
I bought the blu ray dvd.
It should viewed and judged on it's own terms. No comparisons to the 87 one.
Of course, if you saw the 87 one, you will make comparisions.
But they diferent films and are not comparable.
Please view and judge this film on it's own terms.
This is a proper remake. It's the same basic concept, but diferent.
Diferent story, origin, characters.
It is far better than the 87 film, in everything.
It's a absolutely amazing film.
The cast, baring Samuel L Jackson, are all amazing. They are all excellant actors.
Joel Kinnaman is amazing in the lead, as Detective Alex Murphy. He is a handsome, awesome, and very talented actor.
Abbie Cornish is very beautiful and very talented, as Clara Murphy.
John Paul Ruttan, as David Murphy, is a nice, talented, child actor.
Gary Oldman, as Dr Dennet Norton, is awesome in it. It's one of his best roles ever.
Samuel L Jackson, as Novak, could'nt act if his life depended on it. But they somehow coerce some acting from him, due to a unlike him outfit and style, and the PG13 rating stopping him doing the usual joke of a acting attempt, and saying motherf***er repeatedly.
It is a cyberpunk scifi action satire film. A reboot of the RoboCop franchise.
It is like the game NIER. Nothing is what it seems.
The world is futuristic and dark, but not not as grimdark as the 87 films.
It looks properly futuristic.
It is 2027.
Omni-Corp cannot use their robots in america, due to the excessive Dreyfuss Act. They are used successfully in all other countries.
The ED209s and EM208s are awesome! The ED209s are bipedal giant robots with lots of guns. And the EM208s are humanoid skeletal robots that look somewhat sinister.
I never liked bipedal robots before. But I like the ED209s here!
Omni-Corp are a divison of OCP. They make exo suits, robots, and cybernetic prosthetics.
They have squads of ED209s, ED208s, and soldiers in exo suits, who police overseas.
There are cybernetic prosthetics. Very DE:HR like. But emotions affect them.
They come up with a plan to get round the Dreyfuss Act. They decide to 'put a man inside a machine'.
And make the RoboCop programme.
Detective Alex Murphy and Detective Jack Lewis are investigating a criminal, called Vallon. But they can't get anywere, because of corrupt cops. The corruption goes deeper than either know.
Alex Murphy, a good cop, husband, father, and all round nice man, is carbombed.
He is horrifcally injured. To save him, his wife, Clara, signs him up for the RoboCop programme.
Dr Dennet Norton, a doctor who specialises in making cybernetic prosthetics, is asked to make the RoboCop suit.
So Alex is saved and becomes RoboCop.
They can only save a small ammount of his body, and he loses most of his body.
They give him the RoboCop suit. Which is a removable cybernetic prosthetic.
The suit is a case of, 'nothing is what is seems'.
A especially surprising and sad revelation is when you see what is left of his body, when they remove it.
His response to seeing himself without the suit is heartbreakingly sad. And has amazing effects.
He knows who he is the entire time.
He is treated a amputee who has lost most of his body, rather than a experiment.
The name Robocop is not said outside of the programmes name and other situations.
He's called and known by all as Alex Murphy the entire time.
The suits are awesome. Way better than the 87 one.
And makes WAYYY more sense.
He is very flexible and can run very fast, and jump over high walls. Like a augmented being would be.
He also has heavy footsteps and weighs a lot.
He looks truely cybernetic.
It has a flip down visor. Which is awesome. The spine going down the outside of his back is cool.
He has 3 guns. A tazor/lethal berretta, and 2 others. It's the first time I've seem a none lethal weapon have a point. A policeman would want to have his targets alive, after all.
There are 3 suits. The first version, the 1.0. It's similer to the 87 suit in some ways.
The awesome sleek black and red one, The 3.0. That is the one he should have had the entire time.
And another silver one, like the black one. 3.0 or another name.
So presumablely he's going to be silver and black in future sequals.
And to the whiners. They intended that RoboCops suit be sleek and flexible in the 87 film. But effects constraints made it the tanklike version instead. So STFU!
He has lots of abilities. Including connecting to networks, internet, CCTV cameras, etc.
He has a awesome black and red motorbike also.
But, this film is like the game NIER. Nothing is what it seems.
And things get gradually worse for Alex and his family.
Alex loses control gradually, for various reasons, till he no longer has emotions.
Only his love for his family breaks the control.
It culmunates in a faceoff between the villains and Alex. With a lot of help from Jack Lewis.
And should have ended with the Murphy family reunited and happy.
And it does.
But then they spoil it by shoving that talentless tossbag Samuel L Jackson in at the end. It is a way to show OCP are on the horizen. And set up for a sequal.
But they could have found a better way than that to show it!
It is funny at the end. But it should have been Alex, Clara, and David at the end, not Novak.
The main focus is Alex Murphy coming to terms with his condition. And Clara and David Murphy.
The second focus is Omni-Corps plans.
It focus' on the emotional side of things. The characters are deeply written and warm.
It is properly written, and never turns emo. They get on with things, despite the events and pain.
The style is awesome. Very understated, practical, and stylish. The world, items, clothes, etc, look futuristic, but not too futuristic. This is futuristic done right. Clothes, etc, would not really change so much, however far in the future you are.
This is a scifi film. And like some scifi, the focus is on the none action parts.
It has lots of awesome action. But the focus is the story.
It is a calm, straightforward, subtle, film. It has a calm tone.
And to clarify. This is not diferent in main from the 87 one.
The 87 one is a cyberpunk scifi action satire film. Heavily scifi. Heavy satire. The focus is the story, not the action.
It just happens to be very gorey and violent, have a lot action, and is not remotely subtle.
But it's the same concept.
It is a scifi satire. The satire is subtle and well done. It is about the drone thing. And the coldness and impersonality of big business. Making things black to be cool. And right wing media commentators, in Novak. And other things.
Like the 87 one, there are clips of a in-film show, The Novak Element, which show the story.
Novak is a good character. A Omni-Corp puppet.
Sadly, the actor playing him is a talentless twat. The character manages to dominate, thankfully.
The fight scenes are all simple, straight to the point, and awesome.
One part, were Alex drives his motorbike through a warehouse fighting criminals, is spectacular.
A fight with Vallon, in the dark, is pure awesome.
It is awesomely written.
All the characters are well written and sensible.
It is a grey film, rather than a black and white film. The good people are good, the neutrels are grey, and the evil people are black.
At no point is Omni-corp, etc, not in control. They leave nothing to chance. Alex fights off various things by his love for his family. But everyones smart and in control. Omni-Corp are a clever company.
Alex Murphy is a nice man who is very unfortunate. And you see his sadness and heartbreak over things, and his strength and bravery. And feel very sorry for him and his family.
Clara is a strong and nice woman. David is very naturel and likable.
Jack Lewis is a total badass and a great character.
Rayymond Sellars, he boss of Omni-Corp, is a very evil man. But he is very smart, and always in control. His wishes, to bring a good robot force to america, are reasonable. The Dreyfuss Act is excessive, and you can see why he wants it gone. He starts out as a evil/neutrel, but gradually sees Alex less as a man, more a product. He is very evil by the end.
Tom Pope, the stupid marketing man is weasley, evil, twat.
Noticablely, Jay Baruchel he is less nasally than when he plays Hiccup in How To Train Your Dragon, etc.
He must have been forced to act more.
Liz Kline, the female lawyer is doing exactly what she's meant to do. Stop threats to Omni-Corp. She is a neutrel/evil.
Dr Dennett Norton is a good man lured by money.
Mattox, the leader of the robot troops, is very evil.
The music is fun. It is unusal in song choices. Especially the song at the end.
The music is good.
The effects are all awesome.
There are things from the 87 film in it. Some lines, well done. Some music in with the new stuff.
The makers clearly like the 87 one.
The 1.0 suit is similer to the 87 one.
There are things to do with RoboCop 2 in, as well.
There are probabely things from all the RoboCop films and series in it.
The building that Sellars works from is like the Security Concepts building or the Public Works building in RoboCop The TV Series, I think.
It is very Deus Ex: Human Revolution like. The cybernetic prosthetics are like it. But emotions affect them. And the scanner ability is like the CASIE augment in DE:HR.
DE:HR is, in turn, like RoboCop. Very similer in many ways.
One part is very DE:HR like. I half expected Novak to be like Eliza Cassan in DE:HR. He is'nt. It is set in the same year as DE:HR, 2028.
It is not very american in feel. In fact, most of the cast are not american. It's set in america. But it's not yeehaw yanky cliche, like some films can turn into, when from america.
It has a multicultural, european, feel, and is subtle and understated. I would say it feels english. Or canadian.
The feel could actually be brazilian in feel. But I don't know brazilian cinema.
Whatever it is, it's awesome.
Joel Kinnaman(Alex Murphy) is swedish-american, Abbie Cornish(Clara Murphy) is australian, Gary Oldman(Dr Dennet Norton) is english, Michael Keaton(Edward Sellars) is canadian, John Paul Ruttan(David Murphy) is canadian, Aimee Garcia(Jae Kim), is mexican-puerta rican, but from chicago. Jose Padhila, the director, is brazillian.
...................................................
PG13 Is Not Always Nice
This film is a PG13.
But it is darker the 87 film, which was a 18.
It has got a lot of high octane nightmare fuel, and fridge horror.
Alex Murphy is in a worse position than Alex Murphy in the 87 one, in some ways.
His condition is more dire. He is completely dependant on Omni-Corp. They can mess with his mind at will. He can be shut down at any time, till a point.
His response to seeing himself without the cybernetics for the first time is heartbreaking.
In the 87 one he's well and truely firetrucked up. Programmes, mind control, the works. But he's somewhat independant for a time, at least. Here he has no independance.
The betrayel he and his family suffer is made worse by his and their trust in the people who do it.
................................................
There is very little not good about this film.
Samuel L Jackson is absolutely atrocious and useless, like always. But he's been forced into a strong character, therefore he's forced to act.
Novak is a good character. They should have got a far better actor to play him.
.................................................
I saw it in 2d. I don't what it's like in 3d. Probabely it works well.
.................................................
As it's a dvd, you notice more things than in the cinema. That happens.
Watching it on dvd shows more details.
I was absolutely awesome in the cinema and I am so glad I watched it!
I am so glad I saw and bought this film. :) I am so happy and glad they made this film! :)
................................................
Awesome Extras
The extras are awesome. They are straight to the point and fun and interesting.
Some are roleplayed. 'From Omni-Corp' corporate announcements are the way the machinery, suits, etc, are shown. That is fun!
It explains why it is so convincing. The director, Jose Padhila, was focused on realism. Still scifi, but realistic. That is why it's so convincing.
He also knows medicine, and made sure the suit made medical sense.
He is also the reason why it got rebooted. He wanted to make it.
I have the utmost respect for him, after seeing that.
I hope he makes the sequal.
The extras strongly hint at a sequal. It shows the silver and black suit at the end, and says it's details are to follow.
.......................................................
I give this film a 100/100! It's absolutely amazing.
I really hope they make a sequal. :D
You should most definately buy this dvd as soon as you can!
